Hello Yuletide loving friends! This is my first Yuletide since 2013 and I am super excited. I am certain whatever gift I am given will be exceedingly lovely and I hope to provide the same service. This letter applies to both my matched writer and any person who wants to write me treats, which I would love.

Are they going through any sort of rough patch? How do the Bluths feel about their relationship? It would be the biggest warmest hug to receive a story about any of this (provided that they get a happy ending reaffirming their OTP status. . .no breakups please!) Pick whatever supporting characters and relationships that you like (bonus for Ann/Steve).

I Think You Should Leave

I binge-watched I Think You Should Leave last year and I really think it’s one of the funniest comedies of all time. Tim Robinson creates these incredible little worlds that are so weird and have a lot of fic potential. There’s no fics currently for this fandom so I’d be really delighted to see whatever people come up with. I think that this fandom could be a no-brainer to treat or match with, so to make it easiest I’m going to link a few of my favorite I Think You Should Leave sketches that are available on YouTube.

I think there’s a lot to pull from here but this is a few thoughts I have:

How did all of the students come to meet each other under the professor’s tutelage? What are their lives like? What happens after the professor “houses” Dylan’s burger? Do the students get any sort of revenge?
The “in media res” element of Hot Dog Car Sketch goes crazy. Why is the man trying to steal clothes from the store? What does the hot dog car and the hot dog costume have anything to do with it? Paint me the picture of what led to that fateful day.
Obviously we know about the infamous Coffin Flop, but there’s other shows on Corncob TV! Tell me about the other TV shows that are on Corncob TV, because clearly the same man created those other shows as well! Would love some experimental writing for this, like a TV guide or channel review!

CharlieMac Rec List

Okay so these fics are the Charlie/Mac fics I like. There are more Charlie & Mac gen fics as well as Charlie/Mac/Dennis fics that I enjoy but for simplicity I just narrowed it down to Charlie/Mac (and one Charlie/Country Mac - it’s just too good to leave out). There’s also a few fics with background pairings - Mac/Dennis, Dee/Dennis primarily - that I excluded to zone in on the CharlieMac goodness. Hope you enjoy!!! Feel free to add onto the list if anyone has any other recs. I am but one person and though I have read many fics, I have not read them all.

Every Day Is Like by wintercoat: This is an entry into one of my favorite genres - Charlie and Mac just fucking around Philly. The fic is so in character and the mood to it is just. . .absolutely gorgeous. I love the Charlie perspective and the playfulness but also furtiveness of it all. The sex is definitely on the ‘M’ side rather than the ‘E’ side.

Mac and Charlie Get Unstuck by AnthraxValentines: A smutty extension of Mac and Charlie: White Trash. The Mac in this one has my heart and the smut is hot.

Drop Those Pants by Megalomaniacal: An extension of the anus smuggling scene in Dennis and Dee Get a New Dad feat. rimming which is just so much fun. Megalomaniacal writes great porn in general and this is no exception.

Chimichanga by thelilnan: This is one of those smutty fat Mac feeding fics. If you are into that sort of thing, you’ll really like it. I think it’s an entertaining read regardless - thelilnan has nice prose and the character interaction is fun.

Echo Zones by woollen_pharaohs: Okay so this is technically a Charlie/Country Mac fic but there’s MAJOR CharlieMac subtext and I guarantee this thing will give you all of the feelings. The descriptions of the setting in this fic really make it - they’re so evocative and you really feel like you’re there. Read it and then read it again.

anything but temptation by clymenestras: This is another entry into the genre of Charlie and Mac fucking around Philly. I love clymenestras’s prose to pieces. Not smutty but worth a read.

Just Ask by pringlesaremydivision: A simple premise: Mac glimpsed Charlie’s dick one (1) time at the gym when they were younger, saw he was hung, and now well into his adult years has not stopped thinking about the D. Obviously, they bang.

The Came Out Swinging series by sohapppily: I love this entire series but holy cow is Blow Off a Piece of This City just the best. Basically, just Mac and Charlie fucking around when they were younger - my exact cup of tea. No smut but worth a read!

The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret by silentsinger: Mac describes a sexy dream he had about Charlie in a confessional with Rickety Cricket. Very original and hot!

It’s Okay to Cry by ShiversTheNinja: Smutty feelsy CharlieMac! This fic is so great and hot. Content warning that this one is high school. The author says that Mac and Charlie are eighteen but I know with high school fics the high school part can be a dealbreaker anyway.

let’s try to not squander this by jim_morrisenpai: This fic is honestly what post s12 CharlieMac fans deserve. It answers the question of what their dynamic will be when Dennis is gone! I swear I was waiting around for that until jim_morrisenpai showed up on my doorstep and delivered. No smut but a good read.

Take This Hand And Show My Fingers Where My Heart Is by sheepcleanser: Post Mac and Charlie Die fic that has some Mature level smut. I really like it.

Bonnie/Mrs Mac Rec List

It’s unfortunate that there are so few fics for Bonnie/Mrs. Mac, and that even more of those fics just make these characters side characters in juggernaut fics. HOWEVER there are some that fit the bill and I am more than happy to rec them.

Still by Neurofancier: This fic deals with the before and after of the funeral in Mac and Charlie Die. Something really unique about this fic is that Mrs. Mac doesn’t talk until one line at the end that really, really hits home. There’s a sense that the whole world is moving around her that starts the minute the fic opens with a jarring phone call that’s just blank dialogue and morphs into a scene where still, she’s quiet. Absolutely beautiful.

The Burning House by woollen_pharaohs: Okay so warning that this drabble is a very dark and sort of magical realism look at their relationship. But it’s really good because woollen_pharaohs is amazing. Content warning for violence, mentions of murder, and arson.

Looking Like You Just Woke Up by haemophilus: This is a series of vignettes I wrote and I don’t like complimenting my own stuff so I’ll leave you with a comment and you can decide if you like it. “i love the way you wrote mrs mac's voice!! that's something that seems like it be really hard to do but your approach was excellent. the pacing and the way you worked with/around events in canon were also really great!! and i loved all the dialogue and the events you chose etc.... this was so good” - driedflowers

Oh CharDennis, how I love thee. Just like the CharlieMac rec list, there’s no threesome fic here. Reclists with threesome (or moresome) fic will come in time!

Illegitimi Non Carborundum by GoldStarGrl: Charlie and Dennis get high and bond over how they’ve both had shitty stuff happen to them and how their brains are both kinda weird. A simple concept and executed really beautifully.

Mac’s Banging the Waitress by ceralynn: This one takes Dennis and Charlie hiding on top of Charlie’s bed in ‘Mac’s Banging the Waitress’ and adds a layer of humping into the mix. Very entertaining and pretty hot.

Bitten by chwheeler: So basically this is after ‘Stranded in the Woods’ when Charlie and Dennis are in the airplane. Dennis tries to convince Charlie to give him hickeys. Charlie feels so pressured that he ends up biting Dennis violently out of anger. . .basically exactly the way Dennis wanted. There’s an element of sexual coercion here so proceed with caution.

Mutt by AcidicMusings: Puppy play CharDennis. The Dennis characterization in this one is just delightful. This isn’t usually my kink but I love how the author portrays it - it really works for the CharDennis dynamic.

The word of the day by howlinglight: Charlie and Dennis are in an Atlantic City hotel room, and they give each other hickeys. I enjoy howlinglight’s prose a lot and the portrayal of the characters (and their neck kissing) is really fun too.

oh, and I’m your boy by gayrichmac: The daddy kink fic CharDennis deserves.

we’ll call it dignified by PsycheDalia: Charlie says he’s not attracted to Dennis. So, Dennis and Charlie go to the back room, Dennis does a strip tease, jerks Charlie off, and teases him until Charlie nuts. It’s amazing.

got drunk on you and now i’m wasted by PsycheDalia: During ‘Boggs,’ Charlie and Dennis hide out in the back of the airplane. They end up dry humping. Wonderful.

we are vain and we are blind by PsycheDalia: Charlie and Dennis dry hump in front of Chase Utley. Again, wonderful.

Chemical Smile by rissalf: Dennis jerking off to the idea of nutting in Charlie’s face. I will admit this fic hits me right in the id.

light headed by mediarahan: Charlie and Dennis dancing and flirting in the back office. Great stuff.

CharDee Rec List

You asked for CharDee recs and I shall deliver. A preface to this that super super gooey fluff isn’t necessarily bad (in truth, I don’t know the quality of the super gooey CharDee fics because I don’t click on many of them) but it’s not my cup of tea so some of my recs may be a bit more off the beaten path! However, I am happy to rec what I like.

As with the other rec lists, there are some exclusion criteria. None of these fics are majority MacDennis, DeeDennis, or any sort of threesome or foursome. A few of them do have MacDennis as a VERY minor side pairing, but if the fic was > 50% MacDennis it was excluded.

Charlie Bangs Sweet Dee by yuffiehighwind: Exactly what it says on the tin. A classic if you’re looking for really hot straightforward CharDee smut.

Without Losers, Where Would the Winners Be? by Marks: A Charlie and Dee fic about how they were friends in high school. I really like the characterization in this fic - the idea that they’re two messed-up misfits that found each other when they were young just works. It’s also a nice change-up from Mac and Dennis meeting being the way that the whole gang got together. Plus, I like that young!Dee gets to have a friend!

Sexual Cannibalism by dacmennis: This one is Naughty. Basically, Charlie and Dee have sex during ‘Manhunters’ and satisfy The Hunger by taking big bites of each other.

You Should See What My Friends Do by yuffiehighwind: A morning-after fic that’s in character in its depravity but sweet too.

Charlie and Dee Become Jewel Thieves by yuffiehighwind: A gen-ish fic that’s just really fun. Romance and sex can be great but I love seeing what plots people come up with when they want to try something else.

Don’t Know When, But by hrtbnr: This is a tasty treat from one of my favorite genres - the gang in their early 20s. It’s just Dee and Charlie having a chat when the gang comes over to hang out and I like it.

Prom Night by WeirdItalianPlumber: This is another high school one. Charlie and Dee hang out on prom night. I love the characterization in this. It’s sweet but they’re also little trash bags together and I’m love it.

4:27 AM, February 15th by dear_monday: Charlie shows up on Dee’s doorstep drunk out of his mind after ‘Tends Bar.’ I love the character interactions in this one. It’s a very simple fic but it knows what it is and it knows how to be itself perfectly.

We’re Throwing Off Sparks by WeirdItalianPlumber: CharDee angry sex. It’s so hot!!! I love it.

amateur by golden_goose: This fic is so interesting. Basically, ambiguously-asexual Charlie learned a lot about sex from Dennis’s creepy sex tapes and has a really weird and completely fucked up idea of what sex is. Dee sort of helps him along in the encounter when he’s really skittish about having sex. It ends with some really interesting confused feelings between the two as Charlie realizes he’s still not sure he liked it. Quality stuff.

What, Like It’s Hard by GoldStarGrl: I’m not going to have to sell this on hardcore CharDee stans because you’ve all read it but for the uninitiated - it’s a Legally Blonde AU and it’s 10000x better than it has any right to be. There’s some background MacDennis but it’s primarily CharDee with some delightful Charlie and Mac interaction. Trust me, it’s great.

Let’s Trash Our Whole Afternoon by dear_monday: It’s kind of hard to explain this fic but basically this takes place in a magic world of dear_monday’s own creation and the fic involves CharDee and tarot cards. To get the full effect you should read Magic Like What’s In the Movies first (one of my favorite fics in the entire fandom - I’m kinkshaming all of you for not making it more popular) but you don’t have to. Delightfully strange, in character, and moving. I love it.

Chick Lit by SubwayWolf: Awkward failbot phone sex. I love this fic - it really makes me laugh.

I'm Terrified Something's Gonna Happen (even though I know it will) by actualbabe: This is a bipolar Charlie character study that basically sticks you in a point in time and takes you along for the ride with his racing thoughts. It’s really interesting and unique.

Dee and Charlie Go to a Club by WeirdItalianPlumber: Dee and Charlie go to a club and have sex in the bathroom. Very hot A+.

Figure It Out by rissalf and SilentSinger: This is a long CharDee WIP with just wonderful character work and plenty of smut to go around. Content warning for stalking in one chapter. The authors clearly label where it is because they are awesome.

Sweet Denial by AnthraxValentines: CharDee orgasm denial with a buzzing cockring. Holy shit, so fucking hot. If you aren’t sweating by the section where they’re out to dinner in public I don’t even know what to say.

SFW MacDennis Darkfic Rec List

Ye asked and ye shall recieve. As with the other rec lists, there are some parameters. No threesomes, foursomes, or majority some pairing that’s not MacDennis. This rec list is safe for work meaning that, in my opinion, you could read this in a coffee shop without worrying people are watching you get hot and bothered or deeply disturbed by the sexual content. Because this is a MacDennis darkfic list, I’m issuing a blanket warning for violence, severe mental illness (and all that entails), internalized homophobia, and, of course, mentions of rape. This fandom is generally really good about tagging so I know that these fics are well-tagged with detailed content warnings that will alert you whether you may be triggered or disturbed by the fic.

without it life is a wasted time by singingtomysoul: The premise of this is that Dennis comes home from a date super pissed off and in a murdery mood and Mac tries to stop him from leaving the house by tackling him to the ground. It’s creepy and wonderful.

cultverse by brandyalexanders: Okay so this is basically an AU where Dennis is the leader of one of those 70s free love cults and Mac and Charlie are his disciples. Over the course of the fic, you start to get a growing sense of discomfort as you (and Mac + Charlie) start to realize the cult is messed up. It’s unfinished but don’t let that deter you - it absolutely works just as it is and it’s really worth a read.

Man Shall Not Live By Bread Alone by peskyfeelings: A character study of Dennis’s eating disorder that doesn’t pull any punches regarding the portrayal of how awful he is but also does make you feel kinda bad for him.

if we weren’t such good friends i’d wish you were dead by rillrill: This one is a character study/series of vignettes that is centered around Dennis scratching Mac in ‘Charlie Work’ but is also an exploration of their past. I like that it goes into detail about Mac’s past here and I like both of their internal monologues a lot.

swear to god the devil made me do it by orphan_account: Just two short fics that are kinda dark moments in the lives of Mac and Dennis. The first one is an argument and the second one is a discussion after sex. Simple fics but I like em.

the way it was by porterville: A related fic to the one above. Just a discussion between Mac and Dee about how Mac is struggling to handle Dennis’s treatment of him in season 10. I like that this one is from Dee’s perspective. Mixes things up a bit.

Pedal to the Metal by porterville: Dennis steals Dee’s first car, picks up Mac and Charlie, takes it on a joyride, and crashes it. Dennis’s internal monologue is honestly terrifying and the fic hits hard.

i’m not sorry, just unsound by singingtomysoul: An aftermath of Family Fight fic. Basically, Dennis becomes obsessed with how he lost and Charlie and Mac have to figure out how to make him snap out of it. Great character work in this one.

you bring me down (hey I’m not listening) by orphan_account: Post ‘Suburbs’ fic. Dennis, angry that Mac is pretending his fucked up behavior in the suburbs didn’t happen, thinks the answer to overcoming that repression is to goad Mac into hurting him. Strange idea but worth a read.

Synchronicity by Blink_Blue: A Dennis returns fic that takes a dark turn. This fic will lull you into a false sense of security before punching you in the gut. Massive content warning for discussion of and reaction to offscreen rape and trauma.

I Feel So Proud When the Reckoning Arrives and its sequel I Taste Jasmine On My Tongue by orphan_account: This fic takes Dennis’s delusion that he’s God during ‘Charlie Rules the World’ and twists it into something very dark by interpreting it as the beginning of a manic episode. Mac indulges his insane proselytizing and pretty soon it spirals out of control in ways you might not expect.

SOMEONE WANTS TO CUT A HOLE IN YOU AND FUCK YOU THROUGH IT, BUDDY by blairkitsch: Dennis is a serial killer. The MacDennis relationship in this fic is really interesting - you’ll think it’s going in one direction and then it swerves into another. I also really enjoy Dennis’s characterization. Massive content warning for violence.

objects in motion by sinnabar (fishtank): An analysis of the Mac and Dennis relationship from the perspective of Dee in season 11. Ridiculously good - I love sinnabar’s prose.

The Talented Dennis Reynolds by DollBones: This is a 16K Dennis character study and it’s great. The MacDennis relationship weaves in and out of it in really interesting ways. I love DollBones’s characterization of Dennis a lot.

Étude Op. 25, No. 2 in F minor: Gob is a concert pianist AU. It’s novel length and I’ve read all of it which really speaks to its quality as I can’t reliably read anything longer than 30k.

A Bluth Family History: Really neat through-the-decades fic. I love young Lucille so A+

When the smoke clears: High school Gob/Tony AU. The slow burn in this made me want to die in the best way.

Stupid, Stupid: ‘Michael Bluth has anxiety’ character study. GoldStarGrl really likes ripping my heart in half.

Little Less Bark, Little More Bite: Gob/Tony phone sex it’s delicious.

a loaded god complex (cock it and pull it) by rillrill: A series of vignettes about Dennis that also incorporates the Mac and Dennis relationship into the analysis of his character. Here thar be priest kink and BDSM.

Gangster’s Paradise and Leviathan by ViciousInnocence: Basically, Gangster’s Paradise an AU where Mac is a criminal and Dennis is just some feminine dude who runs into a bit of bad luck. Mac rapes him at gunpoint in a parking garage. Leviathan follows Mac afterwards to sort of see what he’s up to (hint: murder). It’s really rare to see dark!Mac in a fic so I like that the author decided to go there. Content warning for explicit rape.

U + Ur Hand by ViciousInnocence: ViciousInnocence is such a gift when it comes to not being afraid to be Naughty and this is no exception. MacDennis feeding kink. Great stuff.

a beachfront of bad blood by castielanderson: I have to admit I am a sucker for fics that beat up on Dennis and you really can’t get much more hard hitting than the first half of ‘a beachfront of bad blood.’ Dennis’s journey is a trainwreck in slow motion and it’s just great stuff. I Hope You Choke and Die by radicalvodkaaunt: This is a Dennis character study which is a completely inadequate description but it’s really the only description for it. The prose in this is really gorgeous and the Dennis characterization is wonderful and the fic kind of goes in a direction you don’t expect at the end.

Feed Me by orphan_account: This is another fic kinking on fat Mac with bonus big cock and cum inflation. It has all the tasty tropes - Mac being enormous, Dennis being angry, Dennis realizing he’s ~really into this~ etc.

Hand in unlovable hand by goddammit_charlie: This is a suburbs rewrite but one that I think was written before the episode aired so maybe a suburbs. . .write? Anyway, it’s not as dark as the episode but it’s also really interesting and messed up and I like it.

Love Thy Neighbor by DulcieFlorbelle: Mac reads from the bible while railing Dennis in a church closet. That’s the whole deal. It’s fantastic.

These are my favorite Dennis gen fics I’ve ever read. Criteria for this list was that most of the fic focused on Dennis rather than Dennis + his friendships/relationships with other members of the gang in great detail.

basura by whatsupbitches (Larkin): Really great series of vignettes about the influence various women had on Dennis’s life when he was young. The characterization of Barbara and her relationship with Dennis in this fic feels very original and true – a striking feat, considering it was written in 2017. By the end of this fic, his hinted-at relationship with Ms.Klinsky seems like a foregone conclusion.

Dennis Reynolds, Sex God by Megalomaniacal: Dennis jerks off while looking in the mirror and contemplates how awesome he is in comparison to everyone else. It’s kind-of crack but also kind-of serious and it’s super hot.

Mommie Dearest by DollBones: Great series of vignettes about Dennis’s relationship with his mother when he was young. The Dennis and Dee relationship here is great, and I love DollBones’ portrayal of Dennis’ addiction to cocaine.

The Librarian Chapter by DollBones: As far as I can tell, this was the first interpretation of Dennis’ relationship with Ms. Klinsky. I love the characterization of young!Dennis in this fic, and how his narcissism plays into his victimization. I also love that DollBones doesn’t shy away from the fact that Dennis himself is a rapist, and probably has been since he was young.

It’s Your Job to Prove It by lazarov: My absolute favorite fic where Dennis is in college, bar none. It centers around the concept that he had an eating disorder in college, but it’s so much more than that. Dennis’s quest for perfection has him teetering on the edge of insanity and failure – yet from his perspective, he’s so close to achieving what he wants. This fic explores his misogyny, his narcissism, and his violence all through the lens of the dangerous control he exacts over his own body.

the first year of your life by singingtomysoul: This is a character study written just after season 12 aired, and it’s fantastic. It narrates Dennis’s journey in the second person from his breakdown in season 10 to his attempted redemption at the end of season 12. More complete and emotional than the actual arc on the show.

Dennis Day by singingtomysoul: This fic expands on the concept that Dennis spent his day making his friends tie knots. It’s an interesting look into what Dennis truly wants through the lens of exploring what he would want to do with his friends on a day devoted to him.

building nothing, laying bricks by singingtomysoul: This character study revolves around Dennis’s obsession with ratings. It takes the concept from The Gang Group Dates and expands it to his entire life. It flows so naturally, to the point that by the time he’s breaking up his video tapes, it feels like an inevitable conclusion

i didn’t write the book on fun by golden_goose: An exploration of the messed up stuff Dennis might get off to. Pretty dark, but really good. Considering the multiple references to Ted Bundy on the show, I appreciate the chapter that has him enjoying serial killer documentaries a little too much..

everybody loves a winner by haemophilus: I am probably a bit biased as this one is mine. So, rather than reviewing it myself, I will quote one of its comments to see if the fic piques your interest. “This is great, it's like a lifetime of bad trips. Dennis keeps trying to cover up the bad memories but somehow those are the most poignant. So much anger and confusion and denial and loneliness... It's also super rad to read Dennis' side of things in this series. Awesome work. (Also great banana tag)” – woollen_pharaohs

Misdiagnosis by ceralynn: I believe this is one of the earliest reaction fics to Dennis’ diagnosis with BPD. Short and poignant – I always love fics that focus on his denial.

really, truly making dennis reynolds a murderer by dirtgrubby: Dennis as a serial killer is such a vital element of the show, and yet it’s rarely taken to its logical conclusion in fic. I like that this author wasn’t afraid to go there.

find a place (where there’s room to grow) by iasipspec: Dennis going home from North Dakota is a cliché by now, but that doesn’t mean it has to be uninteresting. I like that the author sets up Dennis’ return as he is unhappy with his life rather than that he’s yearning for Mac. The call he places at the end of the fic is ambiguous rather than romantic, which is neat.

cheaply put together like a slasher film by orphan_account: Another “Dennis is a murderer” fic. What can I say? I’m a simple woman with simple needs.

The Letters by FightMilk: There aren’t many fics that deal with Dennis burning Mac’s letters, and this is the only one that makes it the main focus. This fic has a lot of emotions in very little space.

Den Bortkomne Sauen by orphan_account: This fic was jossed by season 13, but I still like it as a mood piece. This fic explores Dennis’ mental state by imagining what he did between the time he got off the plane in North Dakota in season ten to when he got back on the plane to fly home to Philadelphia.

Prelude to Disaster by DollBones: A very simple fic about Dennis prepping to get ready for a party. DollBones is great at writing teen!Dennis’ narcissism.

I’ve Become So Numb by orphan_account: This fic is a Dennis/Patrick Bateman fanfic supposedly from Dennis’ perspective. It’s so weird but it’s worth a read.

First Day of School

First day of school today! I was up early this morning and out of the house by 9:30 and was very proud of myself. My brother starts going to college very soon, so I'm getting up earlier and earlier to train myself to go with him to the university because he has 8 AM classes. I finished reading chapter 1 of my social and behavioral health textbook this morning which is awesome. Only one chapter to go and then I'll be all done with my readings for the week. I mean, as soon as I have my classes I will have more readings but - this feeling of accomplishment is allowed to stay for now.

I got feedback on my new American lit review from two new Americans, so today I'm going to edit that. I'm also going to email the conference guy about finalizing my travel plans and email an HIV stakeholder. Hopefully he will email me back.

I'm trying to eat healthier! This morning I had toast with tomatoes and some basil that's been growing in our kitchen. It was really yummy :)

Journaling my life has been so nice. It's a fun time killer, just getting some thoughts out. It also really makes me consider sharing the positive, because I want to keep things to look at them later? Kind of brightens my mood to look on the bright side of my life.

The stories I'm writing keep not grabbing me. I am pretty stressed, so I know that's kind of why. I think I need to write something more fun. I hope an idea for a story like that comes soon. It's not even that I don't like my current projects because I very much do and I want to finish them. But I might need something more. . .uplifting. Not something that doesn't have a dark sense of humor (because that's just me) but maybe something with a little kick to it, a story about . . .I dunno, romance or a humorous situation or something. I have some good candidates for longer-form more fun character studies and stories but lmao I might also just troll the fandom again to crack myself up. There are more MacDennis tropes that definitely need skewering.

Update: reopening my troll fic was an awesome idea. I'm cracking myself up in public.

Writing Woes

It's Friday! Five PM and I've decided to stop working. I really want to write but I'm running into an issue. I'm opening up all of my documents and. . .nope. My brain just doesn't want to write them. I'm not bored with any of them or anything I just feel. . .tired. I'm just off a really structured project, and all of the projects I have going and the ideas I have seem to really lack structure. There are prompts that are interesting to me also in these prompt collections but it's just ugh brain stop saying nope! I have many great ideas - why can't they go on paper?!

Maybe I gotta go back and revisit some really old ideas. Something with a simple plot that has an end. Considering reopening 'Beach House Living.'

It's around 2 and I'm staring off into space which I think means it's journaling time. It's another rainy afternoon, and earlier I got so wet it looked like I'd been in the shower. I'm sipping on decaf coffee in my favorite Starbucks and thinking of totally deep things like how many prostitute prompts I might offer for the smut fest I just opened. I'm feeling pretty tired today so I might not prompt today, but I know I will get to it. Hopefully I can get people to join up - the word count is 500 this time instead of 1000 and the ships include MacDennis which I think may open up the pool of smut applicants.

I have my first meeting of five this week this afternoon. I think it's gonna be pretty good. Afterwards, I'm pretty sure I will do some work in my burden document and in excel. I think I'm going to hold off on doing more edits to my other documents until tomorrow - there's some general stuff I need to flesh out in my AI document, but I didn't get enough sleep last night to have the brain to do it.

My first class uploaded to online today so I put some time in putting all the important dates in my notebook. I also ordered a textbook (I only needed to order one this semester praise be) and downloaded some other readings. We're going to have to do a research paper on a food microbiology topic for my class and I'm pretty sure I'm going to do campylobacter outbreaks in states that have legalized raw milk.

Journaling aka a Spicy Meatball

Afternoon, dreamwidth! Time for my daily reflection on life :) It's around 2:30 in the afternoon and it will probably be 3:00 by the time this is posted. It's cloudy and grey outside, but not raining. I'm not sure if it will, or if the weather will just be bleh. Magically, the coffee shop isn't freezing today so I'm pretty pleased with that. I got coffee, I got my computer, I got my planner/notebook and I'm ready to rumble.

I already got an hour and a half of work done this morning which was nice. Then I went home and put dinner in the crock pot, took care of the dogs, and dropped my brother off at work. I need to get cat litter tonight, but I don't think I will until after I pick him up from work. I will probably miss out on having dinner with my family, but that's alright.

It's chicken and vegetables in Korma sauce we bought at the store. I don't really know what that will taste like, but I'm excited to try it. Pretty much everything put in the slow cooker tastes awesome, so I think it will be great.

Work is going well. I nabbed another contact this morning for my conference, and I sent out some drafts to some more people. I also got into doing more redrafting of my American Indian and gay/men who have sex with men reviews. I can't redraft the foreign-born review until I have a meeting with one of my colleagues and I get some notes back from my preceptor.

Redrafting this American Indian review has been really interesting and has made me think about language a lot. It's sort of going through stages so I had my preceptor look at it first and she was like "add more information" and then I had one of my colleagues look at it who is a liason for the tribes and she was like "change this language specifically" and then I had a conversation with a fellow student who is American Indian himself and works with HCV and that added an extra layer of context and food for thought. It's kind of on draft. . .2.5 rather on draft 2 because of how many eyes have already been on it.

But I think my conversation with the fellow student was the most interesting because we had a discussion on American Indians in how we need to change our perception of them as a racial/ethnic group to recognition of their tribes as distinct legal entities. So when we're discussing AI health and AI land rights and treaties, it's different than other 'racial/ethnic' groups because it's more like we are working with another country, such as France, and often not honoring our agreements that we have with these countries. Essentially viewing AIs as dual citizens rather than minorities. So I'm doing some restructuring to reflect this perspective.

I finally finished my Frank/Barbara fic yesterday. I can't believe I spent 22 days on that thing. I felt a certain bereavement when it was completed. It was a surprisingly emotional thing to write by the end, just saying goodbye to this 35+ year relationship. I got a little attached to goddamn Frank and Barbara Reynolds. Emotions? In my weird rarepair fic? It's more likely than you'd think.

Anyway, I definitely want to write more fic but I might need to take a few days off because jeez. . .just gotta let that drained feeling fade. Then again, who knows, I might write porn or some shit tonight lol. Really naughty MacDennis prostitute porn or something.

I just really want this thing to be done so I can a) dive into my conference stuff b) dive into school stuff and c) move on to completing Transcendental Youth. I have an excessive number of other WIP, but Transcendental Youth is top priority.

It's seriously so funny because last night I was talking to a friend about Sunny fandom's high turnover rate and how most writers don't say very long and I was waxing poetic about how many ideas have and what a great sandbox Sunny is and I don't understand how people don't see that Sunny is the absolute ultimate perfect sandbox and then I was like. Just thinking and doing the math and I said to my friend like "hey is it really this perfect untapped sandbox for everybody or is it more of a 'me specifically'" situation and she was like "This is a you specifically situation."

But anyway I seriously have so many fic ideas and WIP left that I could keep writing for this show for years and not run out. There's so many things I still haven't done! So many ships I haven't written! So many dynamics I haven't explored! And more all the time. . .I have stockpiles of ideas and fic snippets and outlines that are months or even years old. Like seriously, on the "not top priority but on the closest backburner to the front" is just sitting right now at:

Bonnie/Mrs Mac thru the years

The Thelma and Louise fic that I'm probably going to take down and redraft again lol
Fics inspired by that Ingmar Bergman photoshoot

But then I have lots more like I have this AU idea of just this long MacDennis smut fic that's just Mac as Dennis' prostitute and that's it that's the whole fic. I have that Mac + Punk rock fic that basically would just need one more draft of an outline to be ready to be written. I could pick up "I could never rescue you" at any time. . .

Anyway during or after Transcendental Youth and Bonnie/Mrs Mac I probably will end up writing the prostitute one because it seems like a really laid back thing to write during the school year and it seems like something people would really like.

Each of these Frank/Barbara chapters takes so long to write I swear to god. I wanna do right by them! The fic is over 5000 words now which is just. . .so extra. Like, who else would write over 5K of this pairing? Literally nobody.

At least I can't say nobody asked for this fic. Often my really weird fics are just "so anyways. . .here's something nobody asked for."

I'm getting pretty sad about this pairing as they race towards their relationship's inevitable demise! I didn't know I had gotten so attached until I was like. . .wow these last four chapters are when it dies. Like, this is it for them. The end of the road. I started getting emotional about it. It makes me think about how when people start relationships, they expect them to work out most of the time. Here, I built up this relationship that had shaky ground to stand on but like. . .Frank and Barbara were together for a really long time. You have to start from a place where they expected it to work out and then it didn't go the way they planned. Those shitty foundations crumbled but they didn't finish crumbling until Dee and Dennis were almost thirty. So I guess for me as a writer there's a certain loss in my heart as I watch them fall out of each others' orbit.

Saturday afternoon and I'm drinking coffee in my fave Starbucks five minutes from my house. It's drizzling outside. Knowing where I live, a flash flood could erupt at any minute but right now it's peaceful. I have work to do, but I hardly even considered working today. Today is a day for rest and writing and reflection I think. The best kind of Saturday, imo.

Moving over and making new rec lists has been really fun. I doubt many people will even see them, but I'm really enjoying it anyway. It's been fun in the past half-year figuring out how to interact with fandom on my own terms and my own turf. Somehow, I've made friends which is really nice. It feels like I have a bunch of writerly pen pals and I absolutely love it. Tumblr makes fandoms a bit much for me, so one on one discussion is just lovely.

Online school starts in basically a week which is exciting. In between that and preparing for this conference and writing fic and hopefully meeting people irl too at various clubs at the nearby university I think my life is going to be full of very good things.

Anyway, I really gotta finish up my Frank/Barbara fic. I'm so proud of how close it is to being done! I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes with finishing multichaptered works because I will admit that it didn't used to happen very much. After that, I really want to finish Transcendental Youth. I have pretty much full outlines for both Dee and Charlie. It's funny because the other day I was totally calling that series just 'a mood piece without a plot' and she's like 'dude that has a complex narrative' and I guess it does but it just doesn't. . .feel that way? The way it's written is unorthodox so it's kind of a narrative in spite of itself. But I'm really excited for it to be done because I think it's going to be really good. It's funny because you know those are some of my least read fics ever but I think the series at its completion is going to be one of my proudest achievements in the fandom and just of writing in general.

I find myself laughing at my rec lists sometimes because I can tell there are certain recs where like, I totally forgave not agreeing with the characterization in exchange for it having a trope I liked or whatever. I think everyone probably has fics like that, or even things they've written for kink's sake or something. I'll get up on my high horse about how I Only Like Fics That Are Close To The Way I See The Characters and Why Do People Write The Same Thing On Repeat and then go "hey does anyone have any more hooker aus, characterization I disagree with does not exclude hire."

(I say characterization I disagree with because like. . .hey that doesn't mean it's bad. Just means it's not how I see the characters. KEEP ON TRUCKING WRITERS DO HOW U PLEASE LIVE UR DREAMS.)

ACTUAL JOURNAL UPDATE

A shitload of stuff has happened since I last posted here. It's almost head-spinning, which is kind of why I stopped posting. I've had the down time for sure at some points, but not really the emotional energy to go over all the shit that's been going on. Suffice it to say that we lost a car, my computer, my phone, and my dog's right eye within the span of about a month and a half. But we also gained a car, a new computer, a phone, a therapist, and a dog who looks like a pirate so - I guess it's alright. Plus I have had my job, my practicum, and I've been writing fic like a fiend. And I've made new friends online which has been really really fun. If you try hard and believe in yourself, you can make friends without using tumblr \o/ Plus I've stopped being so much of a hermit now - I go to a coffee shop to work almost every day. So I guess there's just been a lot of ups and downs, but my family is okay and I'm okay and so we keep going.

I am currently gearing up for the school year, which starts in two weeks. I can hardly believe I'm on year two of my master's degree. In September, I have been invited to speak at a conference across the country where I go to school online to discuss my practicum work. So I've been torn between scheduling meetings with stakeholders to read drafts and participate on the panel and booking my transportation. Which naturally is the cheapest for the people running the conference and the most inconvenient and annoying for me.

Me: Okay I'd like to fly out of an airport twenty minutes away and I don't really care how long the flight is, I just don't want to transport myself to the nearest city an hour and a half away and get on the plane there
Them: Okay so our most cost effective option is the really inconvenient one though where we make you travel for an hour and a half to the city, grab transport to the airport which you pay for yourself, and then fly for six hours to get here
Me: I will literally take a seven hour layover in Dallas over that
Them: So I'm putting you down for yes on our plan. Also when you leave us you're going to leave at 5:15 AM I hope that's ok.

SIGH. I mean it's an honor to be invited and everything but holy Christ I hate scheduling transportation.

Anyway, I really am loving the work that is getting me the invite. I've been in the process of networking with contacts from various stakeholder groups which is one of my favorite things to do. It always feels like putting a puzzle together, getting people to all participate in a thing. And sometimes you have to get friends of friends to do it or you call someone really obscure as a contact and they're like 'well I'm not doing that anymore but I can direct you to two people who might." Each time I grab a contact or, even better, when I grab someone who says 'yes' the rush is just amazing.

If anyone ever tells you that fandom participation is useless, this is a talent I learned that I had by participating in fandom. TAKE THAT, PEOPLE JUDGY OF HOBBYISTS.

In related news, with the help of friends I coordinated a Sunny rarepair prompt fest that turned out to be a success! Twelve works so far, and I'm hoping for more. But even if it just ends up being twelve - I'm floored. This fandom never ceases to surprise me.

Fic Conundrum: Update

I fucking love shower thoughts.

So despite loving the project I was talking about in the last post in THEORY I've been having a lot of trouble getting it off the ground for about a month and a half. I've messed with it and planned shit for it and it just has not been working. And I like it but I didn't think anyone would read it and I was like. . .well how passionate am I really about it if I care what other people do and don't read? Because I've written tons of projects where I was sure that nobody was going to read them and I didn't give a fuck. No single fuck given.

I was thinking in the shower and I was like. . .ok so I have this idea of this guy that Mac kind of falls in love with who is this liberal kid, kind of a floater in this punk subculture, and they kinda sort of fall in love. And I'm unraveling this story in my head and I'm like. . .you know what, fuck, I am squeezing a square peg into a round hole here. I'm so enamored by what his sort-of boyfriend represents that I can't see the forest for the trees. Which is that I find this 90s floater punk subculture fascinating and I want Mac to be a part of it for a little while.

So I was like well, this boyfriend thing would not work out for Mac. He would offend/hurt this guy after three seconds because Mac is a fucking asshole. So how do I get him here and what do I want him to be? Well, I had the idea at first that Mac would worm his way into the scene by being a drug dealer and I still think that's a good one. Then Mac gets really into the floater ethos because like he has no job, he's disenchanted and 20, etc. He falls in with these punks, kinda makes friends, maybe fucks some people, but then they start talking super liberal shit and he's like fuck no.

Then like skinheads come up to him and they sweet-talk him and maybe buy some of his drugs and he's like yeah these guys are cool, they like this music, they are conservative just like me :D Only one day push comes to shove and by that I mean hate crimes and Mac either runs away fast or gets caught before they do one and tattles on his new friends.

Meanwhile Charlie is so confused at Mac getting involved in two weird subcultures in under a month.

I'm picturing Mac with blue hair and then a shaved head and Charlie just so confused about it and laughing my ass off.

Fic Conundrum

I realize I totally have other stuff to be doing right now but fuck it, I'm gonna muse on this for a few minutes.

I guess i feel like I'm in a bit of a pickle with one of the stories I'm considering writing right now. Basically, I have this cool story in my head that I'm passionate about where Mac befriends like this gutter-punk guy in the 90s and gets kinda involved in the scene and they have a weird almost-relationship that you have when you're young and gay and confused. I love the setting and I love my OC and I think it's the only project I'm actually passionate about right now but here's my deal.

I don't think anyone on earth wants to read it. Like nobody. Which usually isn't an issue for me because most people don't read my writing anyway but I suspect that people will want to read this less than usual.

I don't want to be that person who writes for hits because fandom isn't really about that. I'm really not in it for the hits at all, honestly. But like, I am in love with this project a lot and I'm kinda bummed out by the knowledge that nobody is going to love it as much as me. So I feel creatively stagnant a bit because I can't really force myself into interest in other projects but at the same time I know the reaction to this is going to be deeply disappointing.

I think another bit of disappointment is just going to be that there is so much gen out there for Dennis in college and stuff but there's like nothing for Mac and it bums me out but at the same time like I know why it doesn't exist. People either like ship fic or they assume nobody is going to read their shit.

Anyway, I should probably just write it anyway and throw it into the world and not care.
